Session 12 of 12

Sound Design and the Invisible World

The audience sees the world through the image, but they believe the world through sound. Do not add score to a broken scene. Build the world we cannot see.

Covers

  • Chapter 13 — Sound Design and the Invisible World
Do not add sound to the image. Build the world we cannot see.

Learning outcomes

  • Build one scene through the Sound Stack: room tone, physical detail, performance, story sounds, music last
  • Design a Sound Bible for one location
  • Name a moment of silence the scene actually needs

From the draft

Chapter 13
The audience sees the world through the image, but they believe the world through sound. A room without sound does not feel like a room. A forest without sound does not feel like a forest. When I think about a scene, I try to imagine what I would hear if I closed my eyes.
Chapter 13 · Sound Stack
A practical hierarchy: 1. Room tone / environment — where are we? 2. Physical detail — what is physically happening? 3. Performance — what does the body and voice reveal? 4. Story sounds — what carries narrative information? 5. Music — what emotional support is truly necessary? This order prevents music from becoming the first solution to every scene.
Chapter 13 · Case — The Weight of the Call
Daniel Nzang is thirty-eight. He is wrestling with a sense that something larger is being asked of him. There is no supernatural voice from the sky. No miracle. The climax is a decision. Do not suddenly announce victory with enormous orchestration. Perhaps he simply exhales. The room remains. Small externally. Enormous internally.

Forest listening, The Traitor King

TK-PETER-06

FIGURE 13.1 · SOUND — PETER HEARS

Forest listening beat. Direct the pause and the breath, not only the line. A character can react to sound before the audience sees its source.

Government world sound contrast

TK-GOV-01

FIGURE 13.2 · TONE — GOVERNMENT WORLD

Contrast plate. Helicopters, radio, boots, metal. The ministry does not sound like the lake. Conflict between worlds can arrive acoustically first.

Nya Nyongo above the fog-covered Twin Muanenguba Lakes — lake ambience visual

TK-NYA-02

FIGURE 13.3 · SOUND — LAKE AMBIENCE VISUAL

Nya and the lake as sonic image. Water, unusual quiet, changes in surrounding nature — not an obvious 'mystical' effect every time she appears.

The Weight of the Call — sound without spectacle

Case — Weight of the Call

Chapter 13 · Daniel

Sound without spectacle: dawn room tone, fabric, breathing, a phone on the table. No miracle. A decision.

Strip the music

Choose one scene. Remove all music. Design from the ground up: environment, foreground physical detail, breath, dialogue, off-screen sound, one story sound, a moment of silence. If the scene already feels alive, decide whether music is actually necessary.

Take-home

Sound Bible for one location

Complete the DaKreator38 Sound Bible: base environment, unique sounds, physical materials, character voice, breath under pressure, story sounds, silence, music identity. Pair it with the story cut from Session 11. Do not use generic 'African percussion' as a texture pack.
