Editing the AI Film

Generation creates possibilities. Editing creates meaning. A shot should survive because it serves the film, not because it was difficult to generate.

MasterclassSelection creates the film

Covers

  • Chapter 12 — Editing the AI Film
Generation creates possibilities. Editing creates meaning.

Learning outcomes

  • Run a six-shot sequence through the Four-Pass Edit: story, pacing, emotion, polish
  • Cut a beautiful shot that does not belong
  • Delay a reveal so the reaction creates suspense instead of confirmation

From the draft

Chapter 12
Do not ask: Is this a good shot? Ask: Is this the right shot here? A shot should survive because it serves the film, not because it was difficult to generate. The DaKreator38 Four-Pass Edit moves through Story, Pacing, Emotion, Polish.
Chapter 12 · Muanenguba water duel
Julius approaches. Nya Nyongo watches. His foot reaches the water. Cut to the foot. No splash. Hold. Cut to Nya Nyongo. Her eyes change. Hold. Then cut wide. Julius is standing on the lake. The wide shot becomes more powerful because the edit delayed it. If the audience sees the full miracle first, the reaction becomes confirmation. If they see her react first, the reaction becomes suspense.
Chapter 12
Take a six-shot sequence. Remove one shot. Does the story still work? Move the reaction earlier. Hold one shot twice as long. Begin with Shot 2 instead of Shot 1. Create the version that communicates the most with the least unnecessary material. That is editing.

Traitor King / DaKreator38 stills

The class is drawn from Julius Nzang’s Volume 1: From Imagination to Cinema. Classroom stills are DaKreator38 production frames. This is not a book for sale on this site.

Dangerous terrain, The Traitor King

TK-PETER-05

FIGURE 12.1 · CASE — PETER + CAPTAIN

Dangerous terrain beat. Effort does not guarantee the shot belongs. Parallel editing can later connect this to Nya racing the landing zone, James, and the elders.

Tarmac / landing zone

TK-NYA-05

FIGURE 12.2 · CASE — NYA TO HELIPAD

Racing toward the landing zone. A spectacular move can still destroy a reveal if it sits in the wrong place.

FIGURE 12.3 · EDIT — REACTION CUT

Reaction pair for cutting. Every cut should advance information, deepen emotion, shift perspective, change rhythm, or reveal something.

Six-shot Four-Pass Edit

Bring six shots (or six stills standing in for shots). Write the current order. Pass one — story: can the audience understand what happens? Pass two — pacing: hold one twice as long; remove one. Pass three — emotion: move the reaction earlier. Pass four — polish last. Do not reverse the order. Edit to protect the film, not the footage.

Take-home

Enter late, leave early

Cut one scene so it begins nearer the point where something matters and ends when the dramatic purpose is complete. Bring a story cut to Session 12. Sound comes next — do not score it yet.
