Prompting as Direction

A prompt is translation, not origin. The Eight-Layer Prompt Architecture turns a decided shot into instructions a system can interpret.

MasterclassDo not prompt for pictures

Covers

  • Chapter 08 — Prompting as Direction
  • Appendix A — Master Prompt Template
Do not prompt for pictures. Direct moments.

Learning outcomes

  • Build one shot through all eight layers: subject, identity, action, environment, performance, camera, light, constraints
  • Refuse formula worship — the goal is the information the system needs
  • Run the human review: does the shot belong in the film, even if the tool obeyed

From the draft

Chapter 08
Prompting is translation. The creative work begins earlier. The filmmaker imagines the scene. Understands the character. Knows the world. Chooses the camera. Defines the emotion. Then translates those decisions into instructions the AI can interpret. A prompt should not be the place where the filmmaker discovers what they want.
Chapter 08
Do not ask: What prompt should I use? Ask: What does the system need to understand about this shot? Subject + Identity + Action + Environment + Performance + Camera + Light + Constraints = directed cinematic generation. This is not a rigid sentence formula. It is a thinking system.
Chapter 08
Priest is a subject category. Peter, a middle-aged Cameroonian Roman Catholic priest returning to the homeland that rejected him, is identity. Never approve a generation simply because the tool followed the words. The system can interpret instructions. Only the filmmaker knows whether the result belongs in the film.

FIGURE 8.1 · CASE — NYA WATCHES THE WATER

Nya at the lake. The prompt must already know who is watching, and why. Appendix A pairs this beat with the Master Prompt Template.

FIGURE 8.2 · CASE — NYA REACTION

She sees a figure on the water. Subject is not 'a woman.' Identity is the ancient guardian of the sacred lake.

Eight-layer worksheet

Take the hero shot from Session 06. Complete the Master Prompt Worksheet: Subject. Identity. Action. Environment. Performance. Camera. Light. Constraints. Combine into one directed instruction. Then run the review checklist aloud: character, identity, action, world, performance, camera, light, constraints, story. If the last answer is no, the generation is not finished.

Take-home

Appendix A — directed versus tool-first

Write a tool-first prompt for the same beat (the kind that says 'cinematic, dramatic lighting'). Write the directed version. Bring both. Do not become a prompt collector. If you understand the shot, you can build the instruction.
