The Language of Cinema

Shot size, angle, movement, light, and what you refuse to show. A prompt should begin in the head as a shot — not in the generator.

MasterclassThe camera teaches the audience how to feel

Covers

  • Chapter 07 — The Language of Cinema
  • Appendix D — Shot Design Template
A beautiful image is not always cinema. A meaningful image is.

Learning outcomes

  • Design one dramatic moment three ways: distance, intimacy, power
  • Answer the DaKreator38 Shot Question before any generation
  • Choose the version that communicates most clearly, not the one that looks most impressive

From the draft

Chapter 07
Imagine a man standing alone before a mountain. Place the camera far away and he becomes small against the landscape. Move closer and the mountain begins to disappear. Push into his face and the story becomes intimate. Place the camera below him and he may appear powerful. Place it above him and he may appear vulnerable. Nothing about the man has changed. The camera has. And because the camera changed, the meaning changed.
Chapter 07
Before deciding on a lens, angle, or movement, ask: What should the audience experience? The technical decision should follow the emotional decision.
Chapter 07
A prompt should not begin with the generator. It should begin in my head as a shot. Where am I standing? What am I looking at? Why am I this close? Is the camera moving? What changes while I am watching? What should I notice first?

Classroom plates

Traitor King / DaKreator38 stills

The class is drawn from Julius Nzang’s Volume 1: From Imagination to Cinema. Classroom stills are DaKreator38 production frames. This is not a book for sale on this site.

Wide: Nya Nyongo small at the misty shore of the Muanenguba lake

TK-SL-W

FIGURE 7.1 · SHOT LANGUAGE — WIDE

Establish lake and shoreline. Distance makes the figure small against ancestral land. Appendix D reuses this as the shot-template wide.

Medium: Peter in clerical collar in a church doorway

TK-SL-M

FIGURE 7.2 · SHOT LANGUAGE — MEDIUM

Character in relation to space. The body still has a world around it.

Close-up: Peter in clerical collar

TK-SL-C

FIGURE 7.3 · SHOT LANGUAGE — CLOSE-UP

Inner beat. The face becomes the world.

The work

Classroom labs

Live lab

One moment, three cameras

Describe one dramatic beat in plain language. Version one — distance: wide or extreme wide. Version two — intimacy: close-up. Version three — power: change the angle. Choose the version that serves the story. Not the version that looks most impressive.

Take-home

Appendix D — Shot Design

Fill the Shot Design Template for one hero shot: story purpose, emotion, shot size, angle, composition, movement, light, reveal. Do not write a prompt yet. That is Session 07.
