Preproduction for AI Cinema

The danger in AI production is not always scarcity. It is uncontrolled abundance. Five locks turn possibility into a plan.

MasterclassBuild before generating

Covers

  • Chapter 10 — Preproduction for AI Cinema
  • Appendix E — AI Film Production Checklist
Preparation does not slow creativity. Preparation protects creativity.

Learning outcomes

  • Set Story, Character, World, Visual, and Production locks for your project
  • Break one scene into purpose, emotional turn, shots, hero shot, and approval criteria before generating anything
  • Stop confusing exploration with production

From the draft

Chapter 10
AI filmmaking can make production feel immediate. You have an idea. You open a tool. You generate an image. It feels productive because something is always appearing on the screen. But appearance is not the same as progress. A project can accumulate hundreds of assets and still remain directionless.
Chapter 10 · Five locks
Before serious generation begins, establish five locks: Story Lock. Character Lock. World Lock. Visual Lock. Production Lock. These locks do not mean nothing can change. They mean the filmmaker knows what has already been decided.
Chapter 10
If the protagonist's face is still changing, you are not ready for final scenes. If the world has no stable identity, you are not ready for location-heavy sequences. Finish the foundational decisions first. Define done. Perfection can destroy completion.

Production as a system

FIGURE 10.1 · PRODUCTION SYSTEM FRAME

Scale and layered prep. The Traitor King has royal conflict, sacred land, digital actors, government operations, and memory. Without locks, each generation redefines the film.

Ekinde and Akame — locked identities

Character lock

Chapter 10 · Case

Character lock: Peter, Emade, Nya Nyongo, Akame, James, the elders. Approved visual and behavioral identity.

Palace as world lock

World lock

Chapter 10 · Case

World lock: palace, mountain, sacred lake, forest, government rooms. These should not change randomly from scene to scene.

Government world, The Traitor King

Visual lock

Chapter 10 · Case

Visual lock: how the sacred world feels compared with the government world. Camera, light, and color support the distinction — they are not a demo reel of every aesthetic the model can produce.

The work

Classroom labs

Live lab

Five-lock check, then one scene

Run the draft checklist: story purpose, character journey, major locations, camera philosophy, folder system. Then complete the chapter exercise for one scene — purpose, emotional turn, beginning/ending states, characters, location, continuity, required shots, hero shot, sound, approval criteria. Generate nothing in the room.

Appendix E — production checklist through Phase 3

Work Phases 1–3 of the AI Film Production Checklist: Concept, Story, Character. Write filenames as PROJECT_SCENE_SHOT_VERSION_STATUS. Status categories: Experiment, Review, Revision, Approved, Final. Bring a shot list for Session 10.
