The Digital Actor System

A digital actor has to be built, then preserved: appearance, psychology, voice, movement, performance. The image introduces the character. The identity sustains them.

MasterclassIdentity that survives the next shot

Covers

  • Chapter 05 — The Digital Actor System
  • Appendix B — Character Bible Template
The image introduces the character. The identity sustains the character.

Learning outcomes

  • Complete the five-layer actor system for one major character
  • Approve a master identity reference instead of collecting attractive faces
  • Write performance rules for how this person hides emotion

From the draft

Chapter 05
A digital actor is not simply a generated human figure. It is a character whose identity is intentionally maintained across the production. That identity includes five core layers: Appearance. Psychology. Voice. Movement. Performance. If one breaks, the illusion weakens.
Chapter 05 · Case — Peter
Peter remains composed as he looks at the place that rejected him. His breathing becomes slightly heavier. His eyes remain fixed on the doorway. He does not cry. His hand almost reaches toward the wall, then stops. The second direction preserves identity. It uses restraint. The emotion exists beneath the action.
Chapter 05
When technical continuity becomes invisible, character becomes visible. That is the goal. The audience should recognize this character even if the face is not the only signal.

Five-layer actor system

From the draft exercise: Appearance — what must never change visually? Psychology — what belief controls decisions? Voice — what makes it recognizable? Movement — what physical behavior defines them? Performance — how do they usually hide emotion? Then write: THE AUDIENCE SHOULD RECOGNIZE THIS CHARACTER EVEN IF:
