Character Creation

AI can generate faces. Filmmakers create characters. The difference is identity — history, desire, fear, belief, contradiction, and choice.

MasterclassA face is not a character

Covers

  • Chapter 04 — Character Creation and Digital Actors
The machine can create the appearance of a person. The filmmaker creates the experience of a person.

Learning outcomes

  • Stop treating a generated face as a finished character
  • Draft the six-part Character Bible skeleton for one lead
  • State what must never change if this person is to recur

From the draft

Chapter 04
Creating a believable image of a person is becoming easier. Creating a believable character remains difficult. The filmmaker must move beyond creating faces toward creating identities. AI can generate a person. Only story can create a character.
Chapter 04 · Section 7
Nya Nyongo is not simply a supernatural guardian. Her visual design is only the beginning. Her system includes identity as guardian of Muanenguba's sacred waters, psychology shaped by centuries of knowledge and responsibility, conflict around humanity's worthiness of protection, and performance through restraint, stillness, observation, and silence.
Chapter 04 · Section 7
Peter's identity includes a lost name, broken relationship with home, calling, return, and confrontation with the past. A continuity lock answers: What must never change? Consistency creates belief. Belief creates emotional connection.

Nya Nyongo, guardian of the Twin Lakes

Case — Nya

Chapter 04 · Section 7

Nya Nyongo, the ancient watcher. Stillness as identity, not costume.

Emade, The Traitor King

Case — Emade

Classroom case

Emade, the twin who stayed. A recurring character is an asset only if she can carry a story.

King Akame, The Traitor King

Case — Akame

Classroom case

King Akame on the stool. Power, manipulation, and blood. Appearance is the invitation; identity is the person.

Classroom labs

Live lab

Face versus character

Study Peter's still. List five things the face does not tell you. Then write the six Character Bible headings from the draft: Identity, Physical Profile, Personal History, Psychological Profile, Character Arc, Performance Guide. Fill only Identity and Psychological Profile in the room.

Take-home

One lead, one bible skeleton

Complete all six headings for your protagonist. Bring one sentence: the audience should recognize this person even if ______. If the answer depends only on the face, the character is not ready for the Digital Actor System.
