Directing Emotion When the Camera Is Synthetic

A close-up still has to be earned. Generation makes close-ups cheap. Emotion does not care.

The close-up is a contract. You may come this near to a face if you have given the audience a reason to care what happens behind the eyes. Synthetic cameras make it tempting to go close because the skin looks expensive. That is not a reason.

On Céline's Diary we forbade ourselves a reveal until the double had earned it. On Legion we stayed in the tombs longer than felt comfortable. Discomfort is often the honest duration.

Sound is the other half of the face

A generated face with generic score is a mannequin. Breath, room tone, a hymn leaking through timber — these are what convince the nervous system that a person is present. Direct the sound as carefully as the key light or the era will keep looking like a demo.

Emotion is not a filter. It is a sequence of choices about distance, time, and what you are willing to withhold.
